Letter from our Board of Directors

Dear Friends of GJ Blackout,

On behalf of GJ Blackout, a non-profit organization in Grand Junction, I would like to share with you details of our capital campaign currently underway to build a 40,000 square foot youth multi-sport complex that will offer 4 full-size basketball courts, 6 full-size volleyball courts, and 12 pickleball courts. In addition to court space, Blackout Sports Fieldhouse will provide community conference rooms/educational space, a weights and agility room, a concessions area and viewing for spectators.

GJ Blackout Board of Directors and key members of our organization along with community leaders in Grand Junction feel strongly that healthy community space is vitally needed for youth in Western Colorado and believe that the proposed fieldhouse will be an investment in youth and other residents of Mesa County and the surrounding rural counties (Delta, Cedaredge, Montrose, Rifle and Glenwood Springs). We believe the fieldhouse will greatly enhance youth development for kids across the region via GJ Blackout-provided programming and resulting from partnerships with other community non-profits and organizations:

• Riverside Education Center (REC) in the summer months and days off school. REC serves 1,100 low-income students, grades 1-12, through structured tutoring and extracurricular activities.

• Both Colorado Mesa University (youth sports camps) and the Mesa County homeschool network (helping students meet educational requirements).

An important part of this project is offering a safe, positive, and inclusive environment, with financial scholarship opportunities available. Blackout Sports Fieldhouse is supported by the City of Grand Junction, the Grand Junction Economic Partnership and by Mesa County Commissioners and has garnered support from many local and private donors, from the El Pomar Foundation and from the Daniels Fund. To date, more than $3.4 million has been raised for the $6 million project.

This fieldhouse will be the first of its kind in Western Colorado, with comparable facilities 250 miles away in Denver and Salt Lake. It is anticipated that 4,000 youth will be served annually.

I am reaching out to you today to ask for your support toward our capital campaign. We believe that an investment in the Blackout Sports Fieldhouse will serve to bring together members of the Western Colorado community, fostering partnerships and services to support the physical and mental health of the region’s youth.

Support from the local community and greater Colorado will be key in moving the project forward allowing us to be “shovel ready” by Fall 2023.We hope you will support our mission and are happy to provide additional information at your request.

Thank you for your consideration,
GJ Blackout Board of Directors

We’re doing good things. We need your help!
